A broad meeting took place at the Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC) headquarters in Wad Medani on Monday, 11 August 2025, bringing together a delegation from the World Food Programme (WFP) and representatives from the Gezira Scheme, to discuss the continuation of activities under the Sudan Emergency Wheat Production Project (SEWPP) following their suspension due to the war.

Participants:

The WFP delegation included:

  • Professor Imad eldin Ahmed Ali Babiker– National Coordinator for the Sudan Emergency Wheat Production Project (SEWPP), WFP (Sudan)
  • Mr. Cameron Kiss – Logistic Officer, SEWPP, WFP – Sudan
  • Mr. Rabee – Representative of the Humanitarian Aid Commission in Gezira State.

From the Gezira Scheme:

  • Eng. Ismail Abdelmohsin – Deputy Agricultural Director of the Gezira Scheme for Gezira Sections.

From the Agricultural Research Corporation:

  • Dr. Mohamed Elbagir Mohamedahmed ElKhawad – Representative of the ARC Higher Administration,
  • ٌMohamed Khair Hassan – Director of the Gezira Research Station and Administrative Supervisor of the project,
  • Dr. Hala Mohamed Mustafa – Technical Coordinator of the project,
  • Dr. Abu Sefyan Ibrahim Saad – Wheat Research Program.

Meeting Discussions:

Professor Imad eldin Ahmed Ali outlined the project’s objectives, which focus on supporting smallholder farmers by providing essential production inputs such as seeds and fertilizers, in addition to technical follow-up. He also highlighted success stories achieved in the Northern State and addressed some of the challenges encountered during implementation, noting that registration for support in Gezira State will be carried out through farmers’ associations.

Eng. Ismail Abdelmohsin stated that the Gezira Scheme aims to cultivate between 400,000 and 500,000 feddans of wheat during the winter season, praising the support provided by the WFP and emphasizing the importance of collaboration with ARC in training agricultural extension officers, organizing farmer field schools, seminars, and demonstration plots that have benefited farmers in the scheme.

Commitment to Technical Support:

ARC representatives commended the project’s role in enhancing the capacity of smallholder farmers in wheat production, affirming the corporation’s commitment to providing full technical support to ensure the successful implementation of project activities in the upcoming period.
