Port Sudan – Thursday, 14 August 2025
A meeting was held on Thursday, 14 August 2025 at the Red Sea Research Station of the Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC) in Port Sudan, chaired by the ARC, with a delegation from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – UNESCO.
Representing UNESCO:

Representing the Agricultural Research Corporation:
- Professor Ahmed Hassan Abu Assar – Acting Director General
- Ibrahim Dawy – Director of the Red Sea Research Station
Meeting Highlights:
The Acting Director General of ARC welcomed the UNESCO delegation, appreciating the organization’s role and interest in engaging ARC in its various activities, and noting the support shown during the campaign to translocate seeds from the Plant Genetic Resources Bank in Wad Medani to another state in Sudan under exceptional circumstances.
The UNESCO delegation expressed their interest in implementing joint projects with the ARC, including:
- Proposal for establishment of an Agricultural Heritage Museum in partnership with ARC, to document and preserve the history of the Gezira Scheme and agricultural research by allocating a historic building at the headquarters of the Gezira Scheme or the Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC) Authority.
- Implementing water harvesting projects in coordination with the ARC.
Professor Ahmed Hassan Abu Assar affirmed ARC’s readiness to participate in any relevant project in which the corporation can contribute effectively.
Commitment to Future Cooperation:
At the end of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their readiness to cooperate and coordinate in areas of mutual interest and agreed to continue meetings and exchange visits to achieve common goals.
